Petition to nominate 14 yr old shot by Taliban for Nobel Peace Prize

Post  mood2 on Thu Oct 25, 2012 9:38 am

Malala Yusufzai campaigned for girls' education in Pakistan, she's now in a critical condition hopefully recovering from a Taliban bullet to the head.

From Amnesty -

Send your support to Malala Yousufzai and friends

“She is a Western-minded girl. She always speaks against us. We will target anyone who speaks against the Taliban.” - Spokesperson for the Pakistan Taliban

Tuesday 9 October was like any other school day for 14-year-old Malala Yousufzai. But Malala is no ordinary teenager and shortly after boarding the bus home things changed dramatically - she was gunned down by Taliban fighters who also injured two of her friends, Shazia Ramzan and Kainat Ahmed.

Send them a message of support

Since the age of 11 Malala has been an outspoken advocate of education for girls in Pakistan. She was driven to fight for this right when the Taliban took over her town and banned female education. Read Malala’s blog from the time

Although they have since lost control of the region, a Taliban spokesperson has claimed Malala was targeted for ‘promoting western culture’ and for being ‘secular’. They intended to shoot her dead.

Now, she lies fighting for her life in a hospital bed. She remains in a critical condition while Shazia and Kainat thankfully appear to be on the way to recovery.

Please show them all that you care by sending a message of support today. Show them that the world is watching and support Malala in her fight for girls’ right to education.

You can also show support by signing the petition to nominate Malala for the Nobel Peace Prize at change. org./en-CA/petitions/nobel-peace-prize-for-malala

I really do feel for Malala. Even so, I am not sure getting shot trying to go to school justifies a Nobel Peace Prize. Then again, I don't think winning a presidential election does either.

I think it's a good idea.

Malala has done a lot, with speaking out and blogging, knowing the risk all the while (which has now manifested). I don't know how the Peace Prize thing works, and maybe it doesn't accept petitions because it's not supposed to be a popular vote or something. All peace prize decisions are 'political' to some extent, so, yes, I think they should definitely consider her.

To be honest I just hope she makes a full recovery and is allowed to get on with her life. The Nobel peace prize will probably go to them well known peacemongers: Blair, Putin or the Pope. pale
