What are you watching on TV?

Post  mood2 on Tue Feb 12, 2013 12:38 am

Every forum has to have these What are doing thinking watching playing tell me now! threads right, so I thought I'd kick off with TV, cos I'm a bit lost between series of Dexter and Homeland and could do with some top tips.

BBC4 has been showing some fab Scandinavian series, The Killing, The Bridge and Borgen which just finished its run. Totally engrossing, smart writing, and even the subtitles seem to pull you further in rather than creating distance. Wonderful stuff.

And netflix is doing a US version of an old UK political thriller House of Cards with Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright which I'm enjoying, tho I'm finding Wright's character much more intriguing than Spacey's, who's a bit of a cardboard conniving politician.

TV? Is that a retronym for live streaming? tongue The last TV I owned died in the late 80's. As to House of Cards they also have the original BBC version of it on Netflix. It's even better. Pretty hard to top the BBC imo. So be sure and watch that.

Funny coincidence; an old friend just called as I was writing this reply and I was again telling her about the BBC HOC and why it's superior. And it's different enough you can still enjoy it after seeing the NF version. Merde how I wish we had a parliamentary system in US. Sad

They also have West Wing on NF, which I consider by far the best dramatic series ever on American tv.

Never saw it Scott, but am definitely not into any zombie movies. Evil or Very Mad

Will do! I'vegot a few hours of the new one to get through yet. I do like how they've made all the episodes available at once, so you can take it at your own pace like a box set, hope that catches on.

I don't have a TV either arpie, most of my telly watching is via BBC i-player (the other UK channels are all commercial and shite). I dip into online streaming sites too, there's a lot more good US drama around currently than UK imo. Scandinavian too from the look of the stuff BBC 4 is showing.

A zombie mad/mad zombie friend got me to watch an episode, but it didn't grab me enough to watch more.

Haha. Because of what Scott said here and others on TR I kind of skimmed through first epi. Only took me about 15 minutes that way to decide it was just another zombie tale. But do watch the BBC HOC first! I really think it was better on many levels, and you have the entire story available NOW!! No waiting until next season. Also, the overall production is different enough that I still enjoyed the NF version, but it's their first show! So I strongly recommend watching the superior BBC version first. bounce

The Walking Dead isn't JUST another zombie tale it's the finest example of a Zombie tale ever made. The Walking Dead is all about tough choices and moral dilemmas. The writers consistently keep you guessing about what will happen next.

As to Zombies in general - if you've never heard George Romero interviewed you should check him out sometime. The creation of the original Night of the Living Dead and the subsequent sequels was all an allegory for the way he saw society headed. He thought TV and commercialism had already turned people into Zombies and the movies were about real life, not some fantasy.

Anyway, my favorite show at the moment is "Blandings", which is a UK series based on the Wodehouse stories.

Which is akin to the most valid argument for creationism ever made, lol.

I hope this is available in US. I did like Wodehouse so maybe there's hope for you null. Twisted Evil Oh, and have you checked to see if you can log in now at A+, or did they make the ban permanent?

Opinion isn't a truth claim (other than claiming that it's true that I like zombie movies) so liking something is NOTHING like an argument for creationism. Razz

I haven't bothered to return to A+. I occasionally read the active posts - but nothing lately has made me want to join in. So, no idea if it's been made permanent. I've no reason to think it has at this stage.
